The USC Upstate baseball team reached double-digit runs for the first time in over two weeks Wednesday evening, scoring 12 runs on 10 hits to blank Wofford College 12-0 at King Field in non-conference action.

Another chapter was written in the cross-town rivalry between the Spartans (22-16) and Terriers (15-24) as Upstate splits the season series after falling 12-11 to Wofford March 27 at Harley Park.

The Spartans wasted no time scoring in the first inning, as Jordan Stampler led off the game with a five-pitch walk, advanced to second on a passed ball and came home to score on a Gaither Bumgardner single to right center to give Upstate a 1-0 lead. Bumgardner doubled the lead two batters later when he scampered home on a wild pitch to make it a 2-0 lead after a half inning.

Upstate added another two-spot in the second inning, using a leadoff double from Brody Greer and Trey Richardson followed and belted a two-run line drive home run over the fence in left field to give the Spartans a 4-0 lead. The long ball for Richardson was his team-leading seventh of the season and put him one back of the league lead.

Upstate starting pitcher Chris Cox worked his way out of some early-inning trouble, stranding five Wofford runners over the first three innings, including four of those in scoring position.

The Spartans broke the game wide open in the sixth inning, scoring six runs on six hits and benefiting from five Terrier errors to jump out to a 10-0 lead. Richardson provided the big blow again with a two-run double down the left field line, while Tyler Miller chipped in with an RBI base knock of his own to cap the offensive explosion.

The miscues continued for Wofford in the eighth, as it gave the Spartans two more runs on a pair of errors and a wild pitch to make it a 12-0 Upstate lead that held true to the final out.

Cox (3-3) picked up the win in 6.0 innings of work, allowing just four hits and striking out five. David Roseboom tossed a scoreless seventh, while Greer and Chad Sobotka closed the door over the final two innings.

The Spartans return to action this weekend, traveling to Fort Myers, Fla., to take on FGCU in a three-game Atlantic Sun Conference series. The weekend opener at Swanson Stadium is set for Friday at 6:30 p.m., followed by a 2 p.m. first pitch Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
