SC Groups Say Now Is Time For Immigration Reform

Posted: Updated:
CHARLESTON, S.C. -

Representatives of several statewide South Carolina groups say now is the time for Congress to move on immigration reform and are praising U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham for his role in getting a bill to the Senate.

Last week, a bipartisan group of senators, including Graham, introduced legislation that addresses immigration issues and outlines a pathway to citizenship for people in the nation illegally.

Representatives of the NAACP, the state AFL-CIO, and the state American Civil Liberties Union, among others, discussed the issue with reporters in Charleston Wednesday.

They said the time is ripe for comprehensive immigration reform. But they didn't like some aspects of the proposed bill, including a 13-year pathway to citizenship for those in the nation illegally. The groups say that's too long a time.

Dozens of people gathered Saturday afternoon to rally against the state's "Stand Your Ground," law, saying it amounts to "legal lynching." The group, Moms Demand Action, said the South Carolina law, first passed in 2006, causes gun violence and is exploited as a defense.
