Researchers ask Tampa Bay area residents to help prevent cancer

Posted: Updated:

Almost 1,600 Americans die from cancer each day. Now, researchers ask hundreds of Tampa Bay area residents to help change the face of the deadly disease.

"This is your opportunity to give back to fighting against cancer where you don't have to make a donation," said Lauren Gstalder, associate director of the Greater Tampa Unit of the American Cancer Society. "We are in the process of doing groundbreaking research to save lives."

The American Cancer Society is looking for at least 300,000 volunteers to participate in its Cancer Prevention Study-3, called CPS-3. During the first CPS study in the 1950's, researchers found the link between cigarettes and lung cancer. CPS-2 discovered the cancer connection to air pollution and higher waist size.

"We will be following people's lifestyles, environmental, behavioral, and genetic factors to see what causes cancer and also what prevents people from getting cancer," explained Gstalder.

Researchers hope 600 Tampa Bay area residents enroll in the historic study during the next two-weeks. Lutz resident Barbara Hancock was one of the first to sign up.

"Having lost both parents, a father-in-law, a brother-in-law who battled cancer, it is near and dear to me," explained Hancock. "Having participated in Relay for Life for 14-years, this is an opportunity to kind of give back in a different way."

Anyone between the ages of 30 and 65 can enroll, if they've never been diagnosed with cancer. Participants will fill out a survey, have their waist measured, and give a small blood sample. They will be mailed additional health surveys to fill out every few years for at least 20-years.

"The information that's gleaned from this research study may not help me right here and right now, but I have to look to the future and I think that's what our community needs to do as well," said Hancock.

If you'd like to participate, you're asked to make an appointment first by clicking here or calling 1-888-604-5888.
