State Investigating Old Fort Water System

Posted: Updated:
OLD FORT, N.C. -

A state investigation into contamination of a McDowell County town's water system in the 1980s shows some people may have been exposed to a chemical that can cause cancer and other problems.

The Department of Health and Human Services is holding a meeting Thursday at Old Fort Baptist Church to present the results of the investigation.

The Asheville Citizen-Times reported that officials say there are no problems with Old Fort's water system now.

The report says people who used the water in Old Fort between 1984 and 1988 may have been exposed to a chemical (trichloroethylene) that might increase their chances of developing non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, kidney or liver cancer.

Mayor Pro Tem Sue Gibbs says the issue does not seem to be generating much concern among town residents.

The meeting will be held at Old Fort First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall on Thursday, April 25 from 3 to 7pm.
