A Greenville Police officer has been charged with assault.

Officials said Officer Eric Robinson was attending an event at the Dunn Center on the NC Wesleyan College campus in Rocky Mount when he allegedly became involved in a confrontation with another individual.

Afterwards, the other party sought and obtained a misdemeanor arrest warrant against Robinson, charging him with assault. That warrant was issued by the magistrate's office in Nash County without a police investigation.

Robinson found out about it Monday afternoon and reported to the Pitt County magistrate's office for service. His police powers were suspended pending the outcome of the Nash County court proceedings.

Robinson is a 7-year veteran of the Greenville Police Department.  He's been assigned to the Patrol Bureau during his career.

The incident is under investigation by the Internal Affairs Division of the Greenville Police Department.
