Lawmakers Talk Port Improvements In Charleston

Federal lawmakers who visited the Port of Charleston say a federal trust fund could meet much of the nation's harbor-deepening needs if more than half its money weren't used for other projects.

U.S. Rep. Bill Schuster of Pennsylvania joined South Carolina Congressman Jim Clyburn and U.S. Sen. Tim Scott for a discussion Tuesday with maritime leaders in Charleston.

Schuster is chairman of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure. He says the federal Harbor Maintenance Trust Fund would provide most of the money ports need to deepen their harbors to accommodate a new generation of larger containerships if its money weren't diverted for other projects.

Studies are under way on a proposed $300 million deepening of the Charleston Harbor shipping channel.
