Parents Of SC Boy Who Shot Self Facing New Charges

Posted: Updated:
CONWAY, S.C. -

The parents of a 2-year-old Conway boy who grabbed a loaded gun and killed himself on Christmas Day are facing new charges.

The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reports that Rondell Smith and Lakisha Brown were charged with illegal conduct toward a child after their infant daughter tested positive for cocaine and marijuana.

Indictments against the couple were released Tuesday. Authorities say the charge was filed in February.

Investigators say on Christmas Day, Sincere Smith found the gun on a table in the family's home and shot himself in the chest. He died on the way to the hospital. Rondell Smith is facing an involuntary manslaughter charge.

The girl has been placed in protective custody. It wasn't known if the couple had attorneys.
