Deputies Investigating Murder-Suicide In Cherokee Co.

Posted: Updated:

Deputies in Cherokee County are investigating a murder-suicide Friday after two bodies were found at a home.

Investigators say they got the call around 3:30 p.m. after a neighbor found a couple dead in the driveway at a home on Dry Fork Road.

Authorities tell 7 On Your Side that it appears the bodies had been there for several days.

The house is around a quarter of a mile off the road in a rural area, and the sheriff's office says it would be hard for people to see the bodies.

Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler identified the victims as 74-year-old James Truman Smith and his wife, 69-year-old Doris Marlene Smith.

"Our investigation indicates Mr. Smith shot his wife and then turned the gun on himself more than a week ago," Fowler said.

An autopsy will take place over the weekend or early next week.
