May is Asthma Awareness Month and Thursday, May 9 is National Asthma Day. 

Asthma affects more than 25 million people of all ages and races.  Although the disease is widespread, public knowledge of common triggers and effective management strategies is limited. 

Learning the basics about Asthma

The purpose of asthma awareness month is to improve public awareness and knowledge about the disease.

Dr. Kevin Campbell with Rex/UNC Healthcare discuss the disease including what an asthma attack may look like, the symptom of the disease, and the best treatments for those with asthma.

Things You Need to Know About Asthma

  • One in ten children has asthma--this amounts to 7 million kids in the United States today.  Over 4 million children will have a severe asthma attack this year.  
  • An asthma attack occurs when the tubes that deliver air to our lungs become narrowed, congested and swollen.  Symptoms include coughing , chest pain, inability to easily breathe and move air.  Attacks must be treated promptly and can be deadly if not managed quickly

Identify Asthma Triggers at Home

  • Environmental factors such as tobacco smoke, pollution, mold and dust can be triggers for asthma attacks.  It is essential to work with your doctor to determine what your triggers are and avoid them if you have asthma.
