Big Cat Rescue summer camp welcomes Tampa Bay kids

TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

Lions, tigers and bob cats? It's summer camp on the wild side, compliments Tampa's Big Cat Rescue.

"We teach children to respect these animals, they are not meant to be pets," said education director Willow Hecht.

Big Cat Rescue is the largest accredited sanctuary in the world dedicated entirely to abused and abandoned big cats. The rescue houses over 100 lions, tigers, bobcats, cougars and other species most of whom have been abandoned, abused, orphaned, saved from being turned into fur coats, or retired from performing acts.

"These cats have been locked up in cages, beaten, the stories are really sad," Hecht said.

During Big Cat Rescue's summer camp children will be able to help prepare meals for the exotic cats and explore the 55 acre campus in Citrus Park while learning about animal habitats, diets, adaptations and conservation.

Melanie and Jeffrey Cornwell should have been getting a tax break for years on part of the homestead property in Dunedin they call their "little piece of Heaven." But due to a mistake at the Pinellas Property Appraiser's Office, they won't see any rebates for previous taxes, just a break on future tax bills.
