1/3 of Greenwood County Warning Sirens Fail During Test

Posted: Updated:

One third of weather warning sirens in Greenwood County didn't work during a test Monday.

Greenwood Public Safety Director George McKinney says seven of the 21 sirens don't work, but ten of the alarms are in good working order.

Four other sirens are being investigated. County maintenance will determine why the seven sirens didn't sound during the test.

Monthly tests of the warning system will begin in June as county leaders begin to phase the alarms out in the 12 to 18 months.

Greenwood County plans to roll out plans to educate residents on how to get warnings on more modern devices.

The sirens are about 40 years old according to McKinney and were last tested in June 2012.
