Burn ban lifted for Polk

Posted: Updated:
POLK COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -

Polk County Fire Chief lifted a burn ban in the area starting Friday, county fire officials told us.

People are allowed to burn trash, yard debris, campfires, bonfires, and construction debris again, according to Polk County Fire Rescue. The state law still prohibits fireworks or anything that launches or explodes.

The county fire officials issued the ban in February because of the dry conditions and the increased risk of wildfires.

The ban was in effect for all unincorporated Polk County and the following municipalities: Eagle Lake, Hillcrest Heights, Lake Hamilton, Mulberry, and Polk City. Other municipalities that chose to join the ban were Auburndale, Davenport, Fort Meade, Frostproof, Lake Alfred and Haines City.

PCFR officials said people still need to be careful burning any material. They added the burn ban might be reinstated if dry conditions develop in the area again between now and the start of the normal summer rainy season.
