Tampa organizations build awesome playground for homeless kids

TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

Nothing matches the sound and sight of children enjoying themselves in a playground.  However, for many homeless families, playground fun is often not a priority when trying to find a place to live.

Metropolitan Ministries along with over 200 volunteers Saturday set out to create a playground in one day for local homeless children to enjoy.  Metropolitan Ministries an Bank of America, organizers from KaBoom! and residents of the Tampa community gathered today to build a 2,500 square-foot playground as a fun, safe place to play each day.  The new playground is at Metropolitan Ministries' MiraclePlace housing expansion which offers 50 transitional apartments for homeless families.

"We appreciate all who are collaborating to bring joy, safety, and hope to thousands of children who will briefly call Metropolitan Ministries their home."  said Metropolitan Ministries' President Tim Marks.  "The playground signifies a true community effort to make a difference in the lives of homeless and struggling families who are moving towards self-sufficiency."

Metropolitan Ministries' officials say that at any given time, there are 150 children in the PromiseLand early childcare education center that will use the playground.  "We're very excited to help provide a place of happiness and fun to children whose lives are in transition." said Bill Goede, Tampa Bay market president, Bank of America.  "This playground will serve as a gathering place for children and families to play, learn and support one another.  Our employees are passionate about giving back to the community and we're happy to be here today with members of our community to build a wonderful playground."
