Man accused of biting off part of ex-girlfriend's ear

Posted: Updated:

A Washington County substitute teacher is accused of biting off part of his ex-girlfriend's ear.

Deputies say it happened late Sunday night in the parking lot of the Pactolus school in Greenville.

"We received a call that a lady was being held against her will in the car with a male subject. During that time he was held against her will for approximately 2 hours," said Pitt County Sheriff , Neil Elks.

Elks says that man is 39-year-old Twymon Arnold, a substitute teacher at Washington Union Middle School in Roper. Investigators say he and his ex-girlfriend met in the school parking lot and started arguing.

That's when they say Arnold bit off part of the woman's ear and held her captive in a car for up to 2-hours. Elks says the woman was eventually able to convince Arnold to let her go.

"We took out warrants on him he was arrested in Plymouth by the local police department there," said Elks.

9 on your side was the only station to get video of Arnold as he arrived at the Pitt County Detention Center Monday. He hung his head as deputies transported him into the jail, apparently trying to avoid our cameras.

Arnold is charged with maiming without malice, assault on a female and kidnapping.

Washington County School Superintendent says Arnold has been suspended from his teaching job without pay, pending the outcome of the investigation.

We did some digging and found Arnold's ex-girlfriend also works in education. For safety reasons we chose not to disclose her identity. School officials say she worked at Pactolus School up until January of this year, and currently works for Beaufort County Schools as a counselor.

Deputies say the victim was able to drive herself to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville for treatment. We talked with her on the phone; she says she is doing okay but declined to comment any further.
