POLK COUNTY, N.C. -

Highway 9 is shut down in both directions Tuesday morning in Mill Spring, North Carolina because of an accident.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office reports a truck behind driven by a pregnant woman stalled in the northbound lanes and was hit by a tractor trailer from behind. A third vehicle was involved in the accident.

The accident happened in the 3000 block of Highway 9 North near the Green River bridge close to Lake Adger.

The sheriff's office says the tractor-trailer slammed on its brakes and also ran into a power pole, knocking down power lines.

We're told electric service in the area is out. The tractor-trailer wound up almost upside down and there is some kind of leak coming from that 18-wheeler.

Ambulances took patients to hospitals for treatment. We have no information on the total number of victims and their conditions.

Highway 9 is closed in both directions as a result of the crash.
