Greenwood Deputy Elected Sheriff In Abbeville

Posted: Updated:
ABBEVILLE COUNTY, S.C. -

A Greenwood County sheriff's captain has been elected sheriff in Abbeville County.

Ray Watson got 71 percent of the vote in Tuesday's election, beating Abbeville interim police chief Skipper O'Bannon.

Watson replaces Charles Goodwin, who resigned as sheriff in January after being indicted in a kickback scheme. Goodwin pleaded guilty to misconduct in office, acknowledging he took kickbacks on repairs on county vehicles and using a state inmate to do personal work.

Watson says he hopes to work with O'Bannon in the police department to tackle crime problems in Abbeville County.

O'Bannon says he will do anything he can to help Watson. He has been interim chief in Abbeville since February.
