CLEARWATER, FL (WFLA) -

When Clearwater firefighters arrived on scene of a duplex fire Wednesday morning, the only residents they found in the home were a family of dogs.

The male and female adult dogs and five puppies about 6 months old all suffered from smoke inhalation. The male dog appeared unharmed but the female dog was unconscious and couldn't breathe, firefighters told us.

They put out the fire and started emergency treatment on the mother dog. They used special pet oxygen equipment that is carried on all Clearwater Fire and Rescue units, fire officials told us.

Firefighters and fire medics resuscitated the mother dog successfully. One puppy died from injuries, according to the Clearwater Fire and Rescue report.

Firefighters took the dog family to the local chapter of the Society of prevention of Cruelty to Animals where veterinarians took care of them, according to the fire report.

The Oakhurst Veterinary Hospital in Seminole in cooperation with the Invisible Fence Company donated the pet masks to CFR.

Melanie and Jeffrey Cornwell should have been getting a tax break for years on part of the homestead property in Dunedin they call their "little piece of Heaven." But due to a mistake at the Pinellas Property Appraiser's Office, they won't see any rebates for previous taxes, just a break on future tax bills.
