Victim in abortion pill case sues former boyfriend

TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

"The only thing that mattered to me was the child. That's the only thing that mattered."

Remee Lee was speaking in a Hillsborough County courtroom as she asked a judge for a restraining order against her boyfriend, John Andrew Welden.

Welden is now under arrest, charged under the federal Protection of Unborn Children act.

Federal authorities say Welden tricked Lee into taking the medication Cytotec.

Dr. James Orlowski is the Chief of Pediatrics at Florida Hospital Tampa.

Dr. Orlowski says Cytotec is a drug used most often to protect the stomach from anti-inflammatory drugs that can irritate the stomach.

He says obstetricians know that Cytotec has another use.

"OB's have know for years that if you give it to pregnant women, especially early in the first trimester, it causes the uterus to contract and it will cause them to abort," says Dr. Orlowski.

He also says it can do more than cause a woman to abort.  It also poses a risk to the mother's health.

Dr. Orlowski says, "The drug is relatively dangerous, because it causes the uterus to contract and expel it's contents and that lead to hemorrhage. It can even lead to rupture in the uterus because the placenta has already had a chance to attach to the uterine wall."

Now an attorney for Lee has filed a civil suit against Welden, claiming battery and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

Attorney Gil Sanchez says, "What happened is an extremely heinous act. The bottom line is that my client was given a chemical bullet."

Sanchez says his client is an emotional wreck.

"She is extremely distraught and she has been robbed of her ability to be a mother. This happened during Easter. Mother's Day just past and she went through this horrific act. This is extremely difficult for her."

Welden is facing life in prison.
