3 injured in Johnston Co. accident

Posted: Updated:
NEWTON GROVE, N.C. -

Three people were taken to the hospital Saturday morning after a wreck on U.S. 701 near Newton Grove in Johnston County.

Emergency crews responded to an accident involving a tractor trailer and an SUV near the 8100 block of U.S. 701 southbound at 8:00 a.m., authorities said.

The driver of the tractor trailer, Alvin Singleterry, was driving southbound on U.S. 701 when he attempted to pass a car in front of him.

James Newkirk, of Smithfield, was driving in the car ahead of Singleterry. Police said Newkirk suddenly began to turn left and collided with the tractor trailer, the State Highway Patrol said.

Singleterry was in a lawful passing zone.

The Johnston County Sheriff's Office said Newkirk was pinned in his vehicle and had to be flown to WakeMed. Newkirk sustained life-threatening injuries.

Two passengers in Newkirk's vehicle were ejected. Tahirra Hargrove, 19, and Latrice Johnson, 23, were taken to WakeMed by ambulance for treatment of serious injuries.

The wreck closed all southbound lanes of U.S.-701 for about two hours Saturday morning while troopers investigated the accident.

No charges have been filed in the incident but an investigation is pending.

All lanes are now reopen.
