Local Storm Chasers Witness Oklahoma Tornado

Posted: Updated:
ASHEVILLE, N.C. -

A group of local storm chasers are safe after finding themselves in the middle of Monday's tornado outbreak in Oklahoma.

They're part of a weather class at UNC Asheville.

The professor, Christopher Godfrey, spoke to 7 On Your Side over the phone about the devastation they're seeing.

"It's terrible to see something like this, and it's heartbreaking to see so many families have lost people that they have loved, and so quickly," Godfrey explains.

The group is now in Texas heading south of Dallas.  They've seen five tornadoes on the trip so far.  They return home later this week.
