Man arrested for drug-growing operation appears in court

KINSTON, N.C. -

A Lenoir County man arrested for growing marijuana and poppy plants made his first court appearance Thursday morning.

The Lenoir County Sheriiff's Office says Kristofer Tyson, 25, had explosive materials and an extensive drug operation at his home at 794 Dawson Station Road, north of Kinston.

He's charged with two counts of making drugs and one count of maintaining a dwelling for a controlled substance.

The investigation began when officers received a tip about possible stolen metal. When officers began searching the property after gaining consent, law enforcement found drug making materials, at which point Tyson withdrew his consent, said Lenoir County Sheriff Chris Hill.

On Wednesday deputies came back with a search warrant and raided Tyson's home. The joint investigation of the Lenoir County Sheriff, SBI and ATF found 25 marijuana plants, 19 poppy plants, razor blades for cutting the bulbs of the plants, and materials used in cooking meth, said Hill.

"Me and my wife was supposed to be moving to Greenville in a couple weeks, but I didn't know something that dangerous was nearby here," said Tory Smith, a neighbor.

Hill says the pipe bombs were not dangerous, although authorities treated them as such. He says the SBI safely detonated the pipe bombs and found did not contain explosive materials.

Tyson is now in jail on $35,000 bond.
