Upstate Strawberry Harvest Better LateThan Never

BOILING SPRINGS, S.C. -

Strawberry season in the Upstate is nearly two weeks behind schedule.

But that is okay with growers.

Earlier this month, there were concerns about the cold weather affecting the blooms. Luckily, most fields survived.

Ethan Hughey of Hughey Farms in Boiling Springs says his family's crop is at its peak, which is a major relief.

"It is definitely better this year," according to Ethan Hughey. "We took a really bad hail storm last year, and we probably didn't pick but 25 percent of what we should have."

Hughey Farms is one of several places that grows the sweet, red berries.

Hughey says their biggest concern right now is getting too much rain which can cause the strawberry plants to rot.

Area farmers expect to have strawberries for at least the next 3 weeks if not longer, depending on the weather.
