COLUMBIA, S.C. -

Governor Nikki Haley wants people living near or visiting the coast of South Carolina to prepare now for hurricane season and "Know Your Zone".

Haley has proclaimed May 26th to June 1st as South Carolina Hurricane Awareness Week.

The state's Emergency Management Division and the National Weather Service urge citizens to take time now to prepare for disasters by reviewing their family emergency plans and developing a disaster supplies kit.

People can visit the EMD's website to view an interactive map that shows evacuation zones, routes and links to county emergency management pages with detailed hurricane evacuation information.

Hurricane season lasts from June 1st to November 30th.
