JoJo, the orphaned cat that was rescued by Spartanburg County Animal Services in May was not able to beat the odds that were against him.

The Spartanburg Humane Society said Thursday morning that the kitten was full of parasites, underweight, and too young to survive without his mother when he came into their care.

The humane society says one of their dedicated staff members gave the kitten around-the-clock care, but they were unable to beat the odds.

"We are grateful for the opportunity to make his short little life better," SHS posted on Facebook Thursday.

A kitten was rescued in Spartanburg County this week after being trapped in a hole at a construction site for several days.

Jo-Jo, a tiny feral cat, was saved by Spartanburg Animal Services Wednesday from the hole at a home on Meridith Circle.

Officials worked for more than an hour to save the kitty.

Jo-Jo was taken and cleaned up after the dirty rescue.

Now, dozens of people are waiting to see if the kitten will become a member of their family.

"We've had a huge response from the public, here locally as well as nationally, from emails, Facebook posts to private messages," says Major Steve Lamb of Spartanburg Animal Services.  "We just get a lot of response from the community."

Lamb says it's a great, positive response for the agency, as well as the city, and that they hope people realize the importance of spaying and neutering pets.
