Cherokee County, S.C. -

Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler says that a man who was found in Lake Whelchel on Friday drowned.

Folwer said that Terry Lynn Martin, Jr., 29, of Gaffney was pulled from Lake Whelchel around 2 p.m. Friday after being reported missing by family members on Thursday night. He said that the autopsy performed showed that Martin died of asphyxiation due to drowning and there were no signs of foul play or trauma to the body.

"Mr. Martin was reported missing by a family member Thursday night," Fowler stated. "Sheriff's investigators began an immediate search that continued Friday morning after they received information that he had last been seen at Lake Whelchel off the Sierra Street side. His body was discovered about 10:30 a.m. floating face down in about 5 feet of water some 20 feet off shore.

Toxicology samples were obtained from Martin and the results are pending. They could take up to six weeks to receive, Fowler said.
