Deputy-involved shooting in Largo

Posted: Updated:
LARGO, FL (WFLA) -

Pinellas County Sheriff's deputies shot a man carrying an automatic rifle Friday evening at 119th Street just south of Ulmerton Road in Largo.

Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said the man has been identified as 27-year-old Anthony Gonzalez.

Gualtieri says at about 8:30 p.m., Gonzalez was spotted carrying an automatic rifle after he was "ripped off in a drug deal".  The sheriff says he was looking for the people who ripped him off.

Deputies found him in a SUV riding with his mother. When deputies approached, they say he jumped out of the car carrying the rifle.

The sheriff says at that point two deputies opened fire on Gonzalez, hitting him several times.

Gonzalez has been transported to an area hospital for treatment.  No deputies were injured in the incident.
