SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. -

A Spartanburg County man is undergoing treatment for rabies, after he was attacked by a rabid fox in the Enoree area.

"It walked around the end of her car, just turned around seen me and came straight at me," Wesley Sutton said.

Sutton didn't have much of a chance to react.

"It lunged at me, I knocked the crap out of it, knocked it to the ground," he said.

Once he figured out something wasn't right, Sutton grabbed the fox by the neck and threw it from him. But the fox wasn't done yet.

"It bounced up like a ball and chomped me right in the leg."

A neighbor's dog killed the fox. Sutton went to the hospital for treatment.

"Lots of shots, I think I ended up with 13 shots."

This is the second animal to test positive for rabies in Spartanburg County this year. That brings the total number of rabid animals statewide to 52. There were 137 confirmed cases of animal rabies in 2012.

"To reduce the risk of getting rabies, we recommend that people avoid wild animals acting tame and tame animals acting wild," said Sue Ferguson of DHEC's Bureau of Environmental Health Services. "About 275 South Carolinians must undergo preventive treatment for rabies every year, with most exposures coming from bites or scratches by a rabid or suspected rabid animal. Wild animals carry the disease most often, but domestic pets can contract rabies as well."

Ferguson said state law requires pet owners to have their pets regularly vaccinated against the disease.

"If you think you have been exposed to the rabies virus through a bite, scratch or the saliva of a possibly infected animal, immediately wash the affected area with plenty of soap and water," she said. "Then be sure to get medical attention and report the incident to DHEC."
