Lt. Governor Speaking at Chesnee Senior Center

CHESNEE, S.C. -

Lieutenant Governor Glenn McConnell made a trip to the Upstate on Friday for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at a new senior center.

He spoke at an open house for the Senior Centers of Spartanburg's facility in Chesnee. The event celebrates the completion of numerous renovations at the center's kitchen facilities, which were funded by Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System.

"We are beyond thrilled and so appreciative of all the hospital does for the senior centers," says Sandra Owensby, president/CEO of Senior Centers of Spartanburg County. "Our previous kitchen equipment was more than 12 years old and not commercial grade quality."

The improvements include commercial gas stoves, a new refrigerator and a commercial-grade dishwasher. Officials say the changes will give seniors an opportunity to participate in cooking classes and learn ways to improve their diets.

"Eating well is important at any age," says Terry Cash, VSP Foundation chairman and former Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System board chairman. "For seniors, good nutrition can help ward off potential health problems that are common in older adults. We look forward to sharing information with seniors in our community about how important and easy it is to eat healthy."

The Senior Centers of Spartanburg County operates four centers that offer a variety of educational, recreational, social, and wellness programs and activities.
