Deputies: Intruder Breaks Through Post Office Wall

Posted: Updated:

Pitt County Sheriff's Deputies tell 9 on your side someone smashed a hole through the Post Office in Stokes.

Pitt County deputies and federal investigators were on the scene Wednesday morning investigating.

They say someone used a sledgehammer and crowbar to break through the building and get to a safe. Both items were left behind.

The safe was cracked open but detectives are still trying to determine whether anything is missing.

This isn't the first time someone has broken through a wall of a business. Deputies have seen more than 10 similar burglaries at convenience stores in Pitt County in the last several weeks. At this point, they are not linking the burglaries but say they are looking into the possibility that they could be connected.

Detective Paula Dance is encouraging business owners to be proactive.

"If they will look at people who are coming into their business. You know, if something is funny about the way they're looking around, or asking questions or things like that. Those are things they need to be aware of and take note of," she said.

Dance says installing motion lights and surveillance cameras are also good ideas.
