Plymouth drowning victim identified

PLYMOUTH, N.C. -

Deputies have identified the young man that drowned in a Plymouth pond.

It happened Wednesday.

The body of 19-year-old Hashawn T. Cherry of Washington was recovered by divers from the Sydney Dive Team, Washington County EMS and personnel from the Plymouth Fire Department.

Investigators said Cherry and three other young men were swimming off of a small boat in the pond. Friends later noticed Cherry noticed struggling to stay afloat.  They attempted to rescue Cherry, but were unable to help him.  They contacted 911 after returning to shore.

The Medical Examiner's office is expected to conduct a routine examination of the victim.
