RALEIGH, N.C. -

On the same day state lawmakers memorialized Vollis Simpson, they gave final approval to a bill identifying the whirligigs he made as North Carolina's official folk art.

The General Assembly passed a resolution Wednesday remembering Simpson, who died last month at age 94. Family and friends attended the session as legislators lauded the late Wilson County resident. He made the whirligigs from what others would view as trash, turning recycled heating and air conditioning systems and reflector material into works featured in museums, dentist offices and the 1996 Olympics.

The Senate also approved and sent to Gov. Pat McCrory a House bill that officially labeled Simpson's whirligigs as the official folk art. The bill also identified the state's official fossil, frog, salamander, marsupial and art medium.
