N. C. Congressman opposes Smithfield Food sell

WASHINGTON -

Congressman Walter B. Jones sent a letter to President Obama Friday petitioning the president to review the proposed sell of Smithfield Foods, Inc. to a company in China.

Jones cited national security issues with the proposed merger with China's Shuanghui International Holdings Limited.

"This merger involves a Chinese company with a history of egregious food safety violations attempting to take control of the world's largest pork producer," said Congressman Jones in a press release.  "Under those circumstances, it is the president's responsibility to ensure that the interests of the American people are protected."

The food violations cited in the press release included pork from the company containing a bacteria that can cause meat to glow blue.

Smithfield Foods, Inc. is one of North Carolina's largest employers.

The letter was cosigned by Congressmen Dennis Ross, (R) Florida, and Steve Stivers, (R) Ohio.
