NC Attorney General urges lawmakers to oppose gun bill provision

Posted: Updated:

North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper is urging representatives to oppose a provision in a gun bill.

House Bill 937 would no longer require people to get a pistol permit from their local sheriff's office, which is currently required for all individual buyers at gun shows or anywhere else.

Cooper said without the requirement more criminals, domestic abusers and people who are mentally ill will be able to legally buy handguns. He said about half of all murders in the state during the past decade were by people using handguns.

The North Carolina Sheriffs' Association and the North Carolina Association of Chiefs of Police also oppose eliminating the requirement.

While the bill eliminates the permit requirement, it toughens some gun-related penalties and requires clerks to report mental health findings to a background-check database.

The provision in question came from the Senate and the bill is now back in the House.
