Cree manager at center of Obama visit arrested on drug charges

Posted: Updated:
DURHAM, N.C. -

An operations manager at Cree Inc. who was at the center of a presidential visit has been arrested and charged with trafficking meth.

David Matthew Jones of Wake Forest faces charges of trafficking methamphetamine and conspiring to traffic methamphetamine.

In June 2011, President Barack Obama made a visit to Cree, and singled out Jones during his speech and tour.

"It feels great," Jones said after the presidential visit. "It's recognition for the work we do at Cree."

Jones accompanied the president on a tour of a new manufacturing line, the latest in LED lighting.

During a trip in 2008 to Cree, Jones also introduced then-Sen. Obama.

Jones was arrested by Raleigh Police Sunday night at the intersection of Six Forks Road and I-440. Officers did not give the circumstances surrounding the arrest since it is an ongoing investigation.

Jones lives in an upscale home in an affluent neighborhood. No one was home when WNCN visited Tuesday, but neighbors said there was often late-night activity and visitors at the home.

Police did not say any illegal activity took place there.

Cree had no comment on the arrest and refused to answer WNCN's questions regarding Jones's employment status.

7 On Your Side Investigations uncovered new documents that detail a “politically sensitive” proposal for overhauling the Greenville County EMS system. The plan would change the way ambulances respond in a 9-1-1 emergency and would give control of the life-saving service to the county's largest hospital chain, Greenville Health System.
