JONESVILLE, S.C. -

A Union County man who was bitten by a fox is being treated, according to state health officials.

The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control says it happened in the Jonesville area recently.

The man is now undergoing post-exposure treatments.

"To reduce the risk of getting rabies, we recommend that people avoid wild animals acting tame and tame animals acting wild," said Sue Ferguson of DHEC's Bureau of Environmental Health Services. "About 275 South Carolinians must undergo preventive treatment for rabies every year, with most exposures coming from bites or scratches by a rabid or suspected rabid animal. Wild animals carry the disease most often, but domestic pets can contract rabies as well."

If you think you've been exposed to rabies, immediately wash the area with soap and water, then be sure to get medical attention and report the incident to DHEC, Ferguson adds.

So far this year, 57 cases of rabies in animals have been confirmed.  This is the second positive test in Union County in 2013
