Property Tax Increase To Help Fund Security Upgrades At Schools

Posted: Updated:

Homeowners in Greenville County will soon see their property taxes go up.

For a $100,000 dollar home, the School District says - it's about an extra $20 dollars a year.

School Board Chair Chuck Saylors says a lot of that money will go to security enhancements.

"Security became a key ingredient in the conversation after the recent tragedies across the county, so we found the necessity to add this in to the conversation," Saylors explained. "This is the first time that the debt service millage has been increased in 14 years."

Part of the money will go to upgrade intercom and video surveillance systems at 50 schools across the County. Several of the schools will also get upgrades to secure their entrances and provide a secure, controlled entry into the building.

Some of it will go to upgrade technology. The goal is to have one computer for every student.

Money will also go to add space to four of the career centers, and to upgrade several athletic facilities.
