Interfaith farm teaches people how to grow fresh produce

RALEIGH, N.C. -

A few miles south of downtown Raleigh on Tryon Road is six-acre farm that's run by the Interfaith Food Shuttle.

The farm not only provides fresh food and organic produce to people, the workers there also teach people how to grow their own food.

The year-round "training farm" was started five years ago by Sun Butler. It's run by two full-time employees and hundreds of volunteers.

Modeled on the market farm concept, Butler says the focus on growing smaller acreages and what their customers want. In doing this, they're able to direct sell those vegetables and make a high return and earn a net profit of $25,000 a year.

The proceeds from the farm support the Interfaith Food Shuttle, which serves seven counties in the Triangle.

The farm is open Thursdays and Friday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
