All dogs on the "Super Urgent" list at the Anderson County P.A.W.S. Shelter can currently be adopted for free.

"It's just a matter of people coming in here to find the right dog," says Michelle Powell, the shelter manager.

When dogs enter the shelter they're giving 21 days on the adoption floor. If they exceed that time they are placed on an urgent list. Most dogs on the "super urgent" list have been at the shelter for months. If they aren't adopted they are euthanized.

"I would love the day that they came in and said 'You don't have a job anymore because we don't have an animal population problem,'" Powell says.

Instead, the shelter receives more dogs every day than it adopts out. They are seeing a higher adoption rate this summer than last year. The shelter is competing in the ASCPA Rachel Ray $100K challenge and they're hoping to have 1,000 adoptions by the end of August.
