Report: Local Race Team To Be Sold

Posted: Updated:
Spartanburg, SC -

The anticipated sale of Spartanburg-based Phoenix Racing will apparently go through by July 15th, according to a Florida newspaper report.

Team owner James Finch tells the Halifax Media Group that he's lined-up a prospective buyer for the team, which fields teams in both Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series, and he expects the sale to be completed by July 15. Indications are the team will finish out the current season as is.

Finch doesn't specifiy the prospective buyer but notes it's "someone with money" and that the individual has not been a NASCAR owner previously.

Phoenix Racing has registered one Sprint Cup Series victory, a thrilling triumph at Talladega by Brad Keselowski in 2009, and 13 Nationwide Series victories since it began operations in 1990 but has struggled to find a longterm sponsor and thus Finch has funded the operation primarily out of his own pocket.

This season, the team has used four drivers in its Sprint Cup car but after a seventh place finish in the Daytona 500, with Regan Smith behind the wheel, it's had modest results on both circuits.

He indicated last month that he would cease operations by the end of July if a new sponsor or owner was not located.
