SPARTANBURG, S.C. -

More than a half dozen aircraft and hangars sit damaged after high winds ripped through Spartanburg Downtown Memorial Airport late Friday evening.

"We will not know the extent of [the damage] until we take all the doors. All the doors have been blown off the T-hangar and until they are removed, we will not be able to assess the damage, or the extent of the damage," Airport Director Darwin Simpson said Saturday morning while walking the Airport grounds to survey the extent of the damage.

Paul Young, an owner of an airplane currently stored at the airport said, "we were lucky. We were fortunate with ours. I don't see any damage other than the hangar. But, I know this guy here just replaced his engine not long ago. But now his plane is totaled."

The airport is still open for business and according to Darwin, repairs to the grounds are expected to begin on Monday.
