CARY, N.C. -

You've heard the phrase, "To walk in someone else's shoes." WNCN's Phil Sanchez is doing just that for a new segment called "Phil Fills In," where he leaves the anchor desk to tackle other people's jobs.

One of the first jobs Phil tried out was a school crossing guard at Northwoods Elementary School in Cary.

The school's current crossing guard, James Alston, or as some call "Mr. Sonny," shows Phil the ropes on what it takes to be a school crossing guard. It's not just about holding up a stop sign and stopping cars, it's also part public relations.

"I've been a people person all of my life," says Alston. I like to make people happy." I really love my job."

And people in Cary seem to like "Mr. Sonny" as well. Drivers honk and wave at Alston and he returns the gesture.

Alston has served Northwoods Elementary as its school crossing guard for nearly six years.

If you have a job you want Phil to fill in for, email Today@wncn.com.
