CLAYTOR LAKE -

The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries Conservation Police is investigating a two-boat collision on Claytor Lake that sent five people to the hospital Sunday.

It happened just before 2:00am upstream from the Boy Scouts of America aquatic base.

Conservation Officer Troy Phillips says a bass fishing boat collided with the rear-end of a pontoon boat, then hit the driver of the pontoon boat leaving them with a head injury.

A total of five people were involved in the crash (three on the pontoon boat, two on the bass fishing boat).  All of them were transported to the hospital.  Four have since been released and one remains at Roanoke Memorial in unknown condition.

Conservation Police are not releasing the names of any of the people involved at this time.  Because of the ongoing investigation, they say they can't comment on any factors that may have led to the crash.

No one has been cited at this point, but Phillips says it's still early on in the investigation.

He tells WSLS 10 it's perfectly legal for boats to be out on Claytor Lake that late and is not an uncommon site there, particularly on the weekends.  He says the only requirement is that boats display their lights.
