Deggeller Attractions Inc. sets up for Salem Fair

SALEM, VA -

Workers are putting together the Vertigo, it's the newest ride at this year's Salem Fair, and by the looks of it, it will likely catch the attention of thrill seekers.

"People love the Salem Fair," says Heidi Elsperman, the Deggeller Attractions assistant office manager. "It makes our job so much more fun and enjoyable when people come out to ride our rides and play our games. It really makes it fun for us."

It's fun on the rides that she and other organizers are hopeful will attract record crowds this year.

However, this time last year was a very different story. The derecho struck just days before the grand opening, leaving the 2012 Salem Fair short of its budget goal.

"Everybody lost power, they lost everything in their refrigerator and freezers and they were staying in hotels," says Carey Harveycutter, the facilities director at the Salem Civic Center.

One year later, and we're still faced with severe weather. Just a couple of weeks ago, storms tore down tents at the Roanoke Valley Horse Show. With those storms in mind, Harveycutter says everyone involved will be paying close attention to the forecast over the next two weeks.
