SPARTANBURG, S.C. -

Fourth of July is approaching, but this year hitting the road on your family budget may be a little easier.

AAA says prices are down, but still higher than this time last year.

Dozens of gas stations are seeing $3 gas or lower.

The average price is $3.19 in the Upstate right now.

These low prices are expected to stick around for a few weeks, until we hit the middle of the hurricane season.

Many travelers say our area has the best prices around.

"It's actually about 40 or 50 cents less than what we pay for unleaded in Richmond, so, we said, we're definitely going to stop here and get gas because up the road it's about 3.32 or 3.40. Also, so this is about the cheapest place I've seen," said traveler Keisha Shelton.

South Carolina has some of the lowest gas in the country, it has a lot to do with state gas taxes.

South Carolina charges about 16 cents per gallon.

Drivers in the tar heel state pay almost 40 cents a gallon.

Georgia has the lowest state gas tax at 7.5 cents.
