A man was killed after strong storms swept through Cherokee County Thursday evening.

Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler stated 34-year-old Paul Terrell Littlejohn, of Gaffney, died after he was struck by a large tree limb while standing in the front yard of his home on Seventh Street around 7:30 pm. According to Fowler, witnesses reported that Littlejohn was standing under an oak tree during a thunderstorm that produced wind gusts of up to 40-miles-per-hour when a rotten limb gave way and fell on him.

"The limb measured 3 feet in circumference and fell from approximately 25 feet," Fowler stated. "The victim was pinned briefly until being freed by a neighbor who began resuscitative efforts until fire and EMS personnel arrived on the scene."

Littlejohn was transported to Novant Health-Gaffney Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 8:14 p.m. due to multiple body trauma.

"It is never safe to be outside during a thunderstorm and this is absolute evidence of its unfortunate furry and fatal effects," Fowler said.
