A man has been arrested after authorities say he assaulted a fiancé's baby.

Major Frank Stout of the Henderson County Sheriff's Office stated that Justin Andrew Pate, 23, of Mountain Home, North Carolina, was arrested Friday and charged with felony child abuse by inflicting serious injury.

According to Stout, sheriff's deputies responded to a home on Dorado Lane on Wednesday after receiving a report that a six-month old child was found unresponsive. When deputies and medics arrived, they found the child in cardiac arrest. The child was transported to Pardee Hospital in Hendersonville and later transferred to Mission Hospital in Asheville for further treatment.

An arrest warrant states that Pate willfully and intentionally assaulted the child causing retinal hemorrhaging and swelling of the brain. The child continues to receive advanced life support treatment due to the injuries and further charges are possible, Stout said.

At the time of the alleged assault, Pate was caring for child, the warrant states. He is being held at the Henderson County Detention Center on a $50,000 bond.
