FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -

The family of Moses Mathis announced on Tuesday memorial and funeral services for the man most commonly described as Fayetteville's "Bicycle Man."

Mathis died Monday. He was known in the community for fixing up old bikes and giving them away to thousands of needy children every Christmas.

Mathis died early Monday morning in his sleep just before 5 a.m. His wife, Ann Mathis, said Moses had been sick for six and a half months, mostly with congestive heart failure.

Mathis was 76 years old. He recently returned home under hospice care.

Services are as follows:

  • Sunday, July 21
  • Viewing - 3-5 p.m.
  • Memorial Service - 5-7 p.m.
  • Hood Memorial AME Zion Church, 2801 Rosehill Road, Fayetteville
  • Any community members who would like to share their remembrances of Mathis are invited to speak during the memorial service. People wishing to speak should contact Ann Mathis to be added to the list of speakers. 910-822-2034
  • Monday, July 22
  • Funeral - 12 p.m.
  • Cape Fear Conference Headquarters B, 10225 Fayetteville Road, Raeford

Mathis spent 22 years collecting bicycles from the community and then fixing them up to distribute at Christmas to children whose families could not afford them. At one point, Fayetteville police had to advise people to plan their trip ahead of time because of the crowds expected to show up at Mathis' warehouse.

Mathis' wife says the bicycle distribution will continue this Christmas, but isn't sure if it will go on after that.
