SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. -

Agents are investigating allegations that someone embezzled thousands of dollars from Spartanburg County Government's Finance Department, according to multiple sources close to the investigation.

The S.C. Law Enforcement Division on Monday would confirm only that it has an open investigation involving Spartanburg County Government. A spokesman for the agency said it would not be appropriate to discuss details of the active investigation.

Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright said that he received a call about three weeks ago from county administrators who were concerned that money was missing from the finance department.

Wright said he did not investigate or ask anymore questions and instead immediately called SLED since it would be a conflict of interest for him to investigate another county agency.

We are working to gather more details on this story and will post them as they become available.
