Russia's state news agency RIA Novosti says American Edward Snowden is asking for temporary asylum in Russia.

Snowden, who's admitted disclosing U.S. government surveillance programs, has said he would seek Russian asylum temporarily, before going to Venezuela, Bolivia or Nicaragua, which have offered him asylum.

Snowden is believed to have been in Moscow's international airport since arriving June 23.
