EMERALD ISLE, NC -

An Ohio man is dead after rescuing his children from the surf at Emerald Isle.

Police said 39-year-old Andy W. Clegg of Columbus, Ohio died Monday morning at Carolina East Medical Center after he went into the ocean to rescue his 9 and 11 year old sons.

It happened Sunday in the 700 block of Ocean Drive around 3:35 p.m.

When Clegg noticed the boys were having trouble getting to shore, he went into the water to get them. After getting them safely to shore, he began to show signs of complications.

His father-in-law, Nelson Hardesty, had to pull him from the water, but Clegg was unresponsive.

CPR was started and a bystander called 911.

Clegg was taken to Carteret General Hospital and listed in critical condition. He was transported to Carolina East Medical Center in New Bern where he later died.

Police said the preliminary finding is that his death was the result of a cardiac event.
